Hamilton had to start from last place on the grid after being excluded from qualifying in Sao Paulo due to a technical defect in the DRS after a problem with his rear wing.

The Mercedes driver made his way through the field, including a spectacular lunge on the final lap on Norris at Turn 1.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Saturday’s sprint race, Norris was shown footage of Hamilton’s overtaking maneuver in which he replied, “Looks pretty easy to him, doesn’t it?

“He didn’t even have to work. Overtaking wasn’t that good. I just didn’t have to take a stupid risk to defend – he’s in a different league from us. “

Norris later admitted he has no intention of defending himself against Hamilton in the Grand Prix – although Hamilton qualified fifth in the sprint, he will start from tenth after serving a starting penalty for an engine change.

“There’s no point in wasting my own tires keeping this guy behind me,” he added. “When he’s gone from last to fifth in 24 laps, he should have three wheels on his car or something to make things a little harder for him.”

Norris was satisfied with his own performance in Sprint Qualifying and overtook Charles Leclerc at Turn 4.

“I think it was a good race for me,” explained Norris. “I was happy with today, before the Ferrari, which was one of our jobs, another would have been nice, but he [Sainz] was too far ahead.

“I was pretty shocking earlier in FP2 and I just didn’t do very well, but with my driving I made some improvements for the race and it definitely paid off in terms of pace against Charles so I’m happy, I smile at least.”
