“No Distractions” from Hamilton F1 deal amid title fight

Mercedes: “No distractions” from Hamilton F1 contract amid title fight

The German automaker is in a very close battle with rival Red Bull for this year’s championship, with the rival in good shape after winning the last four Grand Prix.

Since Mercedes knows that they have to do everything they can to keep Red Bull out of hand, the possibility of lengthy contract talks was not ideal.

Before the Austrian Grand Prix, Mercedes announced that Hamilton had signed a new two-year contract that will keep him on the team until the end of 2023.

Wolff said it had always been clear to the team that Hamilton should stay and that the contract matter should be closed as early as possible.

“As we are entering a new era of Formula 1 from 2022, there is no better driver in our team than Lewis,” said Wolff. “His achievements in this sport speak for themselves and with his experience, speed and racing skills he is at the peak of his abilities.

“We’re excited about the fight we’re having this year – and that’s why we wanted to sign this contract early so that we aren’t distracted from the competition on the track. I’ve always said that as long as Lewis still has a passion for racing, he can go on as long as he wants. “

The news that Hamilton is staying in F1 was greeted by F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, aware of the seven-time champion’s star attraction.

“This is fantastic news for Formula 1 and I am delighted that Lewis will stay in F1 for at least two more years,” said Domenicali.

“What he has achieved in this sport is incredible and I know there is more to come. He is a global superstar on and off the racetrack and his positive influence on Formula 1 is enormous. “

Wolff’s comments about distractions that harm Mercedes came after Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto suggested last week that the Brackley squad paid the price for staff instability and the late Hamilton deal ahead of this season.

“There were already significant internal changes last year, with roles perhaps being revised. Plus the signature with the driver that didn’t arrive until February, ”he said.

“I think they are signs of a distraction that led to the current situation.”
