Nico Rosberg knows a thing or two about the Lewis Hamilton fight. The German as a Mercedes team-mate of the Briton finally defeated him and took the driver’s title in 2016. Rosberg is no longer affiliated with the Mercedes F1 team but claims he was still feeling pain when Hamilton lost to Verstappen under strange safety car rules. He told the Cross Country Rally YouTube channel:
“I felt a pain, an incredible pain. I have nothing to do with Mercedes now, but of course it’s my family from before and an incredible pain. They were 99% sure that they would win the World Cup until there were three rounds to go. After losing it and losing it in a fight like this where there was nothing I could do because the tires had 50 laps it was an incredible pain. It’s a shame that the FIA came to a somewhat strange decision. “
Nico Rosberg praised the intense championship fight between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen and described it as “phenomenal”. He said:
“It was great fun to see it on TV, the match between Hamilton and Verstappen was phenomenal. They are the two best drivers in many years. Verstappen is also champion many times, which they both met in every race, that was phenomenal. “
The rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg put a strain on their relationships
Mercedes won the constructors ‘and drivers’ titles with ease in 2016, but the latter brought with it some internal conflicts for the team. An extremely competent car paired with two extremely talented drivers meant trouble for the team as the two often retired at the top of the grid.

The most notorious case of friction between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg was the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, where both drivers collided with each other on the first lap. Both drivers blamed each other for the incident. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff had to step in with diplomatic statements to the press. He said:
“When we looked at the incident and there were people on the team who had racing experience and had an opinion, we all had different opinions. What I’m taking home is that it was an incident that both sides could have avoided. It’s so hard to really blame a percentage. ”
