The engine in Valtteri Bottas’ Mercedes Formula 1 car was largely “irreparably damaged” in his massive crash at the end of the race with George Russell at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Bottas and Williams rider Russell came together at high speed en route to the Tamburello chicane while battling for ninth place in the Imola race last weekend, resulting in a fierce one-two with the barriers registered at around 30G were.
While Russell and Bottas walked away from the incident unscathed, save for a knee injury for the latter, the same could not be said for any of their cars.

The extent of the damage to Bottas’ W12 has now been announced by Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes roadside technical director.
“As much as we like our car, we like Valtteri more and luckily he got out of it with little more than one injured knee from the impact,” said Shovlin.
“But it was a big crash, we saw about 30 G at points of its travel around the walls and the track. Unfortunately, the car didn’t do that well. That’s quite a bit of damage.

“We managed to bring a lot of that back to the UK. We got the power unit in Brixworth where it will be carefully checked and inspected and we will just go over this and some of the parts that we can possibly salvage. Unfortunately, much of it is irreparably damaged. “
Shovlin said Mercedes is focused on making sure there are enough parts now for the upcoming Portuguese Grand Prix on May 2nd.
He added, “We are currently looking at a logistics plan to try to get enough parts to Portimão the following week to make sure we can drive both cars in the correct specification.”
