Mercedes-AMG Cars and SUVs – 2021 to 2031 | Analysis of the automotive industry

The ONE was announced during an event on the eve of the 2016 Paris Motor Show and has been a long time coming

Electrification will soon be the standard setting for the powertrains from Mercedes-AMG. This is a big change for a Daimler division that started out as AMG, a company that drove V8 sedans before evolving into a small manufacturer of production cars.

We shouldn’t have to wait too long for official news about the next Mercedes-AMG C-Class. The new model will reportedly lose V8 performance and get a gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. This consists of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder M 139 engine, an engine and an integrated 48-V starter. There should be at some point C 53 e 4MATIC + and C 63 e 4MATIC + Variants, but the second of these two will likely be announced first.

The current E-Class got bigger around 2016 and is to be replaced in 2023. The E 43 4MATIC sedan, which has since been replaced, had its world premiere six months later at the New York Motor Show in March 2016. It was powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 295 kW (401 hp). The torque was 520 Nm, the standard gearbox was a nine-speed automatic and the car had pneumatic suspension. An estate was also added in 2016.

The E 53 4MATIC + replaced the E 43 4MATIC. It had its world premiere as a coupé and convertible at the Detroit Motor Show 2018. In contrast to the E 43 and E 63, these are hybrids. M 256 is the code for the 2,999 cc in-line six-cylinder petrol engine in these vehicles. This results in 320 kW (435 PS) and 520 Nm. In addition, there is 16 kW (22 PS) and 250 Nm from one engine. The first cars were delivered to German dealers in August 2018. There are also sedan and station wagon versions of the E 53 4MATIC +.

The E 63 4MATIC and the E 63 S 4MATIC were announced in October 2016 before their debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, both of which are powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. The output is 420 kW (571 PS) and 750 Nm for the E 63 and 450 kW (612 PS) and 850 Nm for the S. The only transmission for both is the Mercedes-Benz Speedshift nine-speed automatic. The E 63 and E 63 S were available from European dealers from March 2017 and were sold in the USA from the middle of the year for the 2018 model year.

The E 63 4MATIC + Estate and the E 63 S 4MATIC + Estate were world premieres at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2017.

A facelift for the CLS-Class was announced only recently, and this will be the final makeover of the big four-door coupe. It only comes in as a Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC + form. The car is powered by the same in-line six-cylinder petrol engine with a displacement of 2,999 cc as the E 53 4MATIC +.

All versions of the CLS come on the same line as the E-Class sedan and station wagon at the Sindelfingen plant. There will likely be no direct replacement for the CLS-class.

The V8 range now consists of the E 63 4MATIC + and E 63 S 4MATIC +. A facelift for the E 53 4MATIC + was announced in March 2020. Two months later, the revised E 53 4MATIC + Coupé and Cabriolet were unveiled digitally.

The corresponding updates for the sedans and station wagons E 63 4MATIC and E 63 S 4MATIC were announced in June 2020. Power and torque remain at 420 kW and 750 Nm or 450 kW and 850 Nm.

The Mercedes-AMG editions of the new S-Class become PHEVs and are called P 63 e 4MATIC + and P 73 e 4MATIC +. Both are powered by new derivatives of the well-known 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 from Daimler, which are boosted by electrification via a single engine. A performance of around 700 hp or 800 hp is expected. The first of the couple will be announced soon. For the life cycle, a facelift would be due in 2024 and a replacement in 2028.

We should finally see this ONE later in 2021. The mid-engine hybrid hypercar was announced by Thomas Weber of Daimler during an event on the eve of the 2016 Paris Motor Show as being under development. The public debut took place at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 2017, where a prototype with the label Project ONE was presented. The model name was announced a year later.

The engine is based on the 1.6-liter V6 from Mercedes-Benz, which will be used in its Formula 1 car from the 2017 season, and there will also be MGU-K and MGU-H motor-generator units.

Back in tune with the F1 car, Project ONE’s transmission is part of its structure. However, it will be an automated manual transmission. Fewer than 275 cars are made. According to Tobias Moers, the then head of AMG, who was interviewed in October 2018, production would be delayed until the second half of 2020. This was then postponed to 2021.

The range of the electricity will be around 30 km and the car will travel at the normal unleaded 98-octane speed, says AMG. The top speed will be over 218 mph, claims Mercedes-AMG.

Daimler has yet to announce where the one will be built. It can be made well in England. This might make sense as it is already known that the monocoque, body panels and suspension systems will come from Mercedes’ F1 factories in Brixworth and Brackley.

Reports for future models from many other manufacturers are summarized in the Summaries of OEM Product Strategies section of just-auto.com.
