Mercedes Vision EQXX Concept debuts on January 3rd, promises a range of 621 miles

Mercedes-Benz intends to go the purely electric route by 2030 and will shortly be presenting a concept car to demonstrate its leadership role and capabilities in electric vehicle technology.

The automaker has already given insights into the concept known as the Vision EQXX, and its R&D boss Markus Schaefer confirmed in a LinkedIn post last week that the reveal would take place on January 3, 2022. The date suggests a possible showing at the Consumer Electronics Show, which begins January 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Schäfer also announced a few new details about the concept, namely that it is 1,000 kilometers (approx Dream Edition series. However, while the Lucid is a mid-range sedan, the Mercedes is a compact model with teaser photos that point to a sleek, coupé-like Point out the body.

Mercedes used all of its various divisions to maximize the car’s efficiency, including the Formula 1 team. This also extends to the software used by the car. According to Schäfer, the car consumes a single-digit kilowatt hour per 100 kilometers at normal motorway speeds.

The efficiency measures we know include a sleek body with a drag coefficient of less than 0.20 cd for the Mercedes EQS – which has the lowest rating for a production vehicle.

There is also a unique cell design for the battery. According to Schäfer, the energy density of the battery cells is 20% higher than that of the EQS.

We also know that there are highly efficient electric motors. These are said to have been developed by the British electric motor specialist Yasa, which Mercedes took over at the beginning of the year. The company is known for its axial flux motors, which are characterized by high performance and low weight. The Mercedes F1 team also helped in this regard, both in terms of drive power and energy recovery.

While Mercedes is unlikely to bring a production version of the Vision EQXX onto the market, the knowledge gained during development will benefit future electric vehicles from the automaker. Mercedes plans to spend more than 40 billion euros (about 45 billion US dollars) on developing electric vehicles between 2022 and 2030.
