According to reports from the Italian edition of Motorsport Network, the Mercedes F1 team faces a particular challenge. The website reported that the new F1 cars will have a shortened wheelbase, something Mercedes can’t afford given its car design, which could result in a significant loss of downforce.
The Italian publication explained the technical details in the regulations that will affect the Mercedes W13E:
“FIA regulations call for a wheelbase between 3,400 and 3,600 millimeters: the maximum wheelbase is about 17 cm shorter than the 2021 car, but one of the challenges of the ground effect cars will be to find just the right distance between the wheels.”
According to reports from Motorsport Italy, the eight-time world champion has reached its maximum when it comes to the length of the wheelbase. With the Silver Arrow W13 E, a shortened chassis paired with ballast means a significant loss of downforce.

Explaining the wheelbase and transients, the Italian edition of Motorsport Network reported:
“A short wheelbase favors an agile car in transients and with a tendency to reach a minimum weight of 793 kg (43 kg more than last year!). With a little ballast, however, a little area is undoubtedly given up. of the venturi tubes and you pay in terms of downforce. The difficulty will be finding the right compromise.”
The publication anticipates that the reigning champions will opt for a long chassis on wheels to balance their cars’ agility and transients. The pecking order in terms of the team’s performances in the 2022 season will depend heavily on how the car develops throughout the season.
In pre-season testing for 2021, the Silver Arrows team struggled with both setups as regulations were introduced for reduced floor space and the reliability of their engine.
