Mercedes has announced the signing of 13-year-old Chinese kart star Yuanpu Cui for its junior program.

The move follows McLaren’s recruitment of 13-year-old American prodigy Ugo Ugochukwu earlier this year.

With the takeover of Cui, a five-man Mercedes up-and-coming squad was created alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli, Paul Aron, Alex Powell and Frederik Vesti.

Cui, a product of the central Chinese city of Xi’an, drives various series for Argenti Motorsport in the OK junior kart classes.

“We are very pleased to welcome Yuanpu Cui as a new addition to our junior program in the Mercedes family,” said Mercedes driver development consultant Gwen Lagrue.

“We pride ourselves on helping young drivers from a wide variety of countries and backgrounds climb the motorsport ladder.

“Yuanpu has certainly caught our attention and has made great promises during his karting career so far.

“He’s the top kart talent from China and there hasn’t been a Chinese F1 driver yet, so we look forward to seeing Yuanpu progress and help him move up the ranks.”
