Nico Rosberg and his retirement shortly after winning the F1 championship in 2016 shocked the world. Nobody could believe that the Mercedes driver called it a day after achieving something special.
Surely he would want more of it, right? The world thought so, but Nico thought differently.
It wasn’t just F1 fans who were confused by Rosberg’s decision to leave. The news came as a great shock to the people at Mercedes too.
Ron Meadows, Andrew Shovlin, Simon Cole and James Vowles, who have been on the team for 20 years, showed how shocked the team was on the latest installment of the Beyond the Grid podcast.
One of them said, “Toto called us into the office and we didn’t know what to expect. But when Toto asked us, “List 5 things I’m about to say,” then Nico, who was retiring, wasn’t on that list. It was just a bizarre moment. “
Although Rosberg’s resignation didn’t affect Mercedes as a whole, F1 fans definitely regret it. While the Silver Arrows continued to dominate and Valtteri Bottas was the perfect foil for Lewis Hamilton, fans were denied an exciting title race for the drivers’ championship.
Despite their subsequent success without Rosberg, the question continues to bother Mercedes to this day.
Mercedes still can’t take care of Nico Rosberg’s retirement in 2016
The general consensus between the four was: “It’s hard to find out why he asked to be released from his contract.
“Even if he didn’t beat Lewis again, he was in a good car, he would win races, he would be part of a team that was doing something amazing. But there must have been very personal reasons. He had obviously achieved what he wanted. “

The rivalry between Rosberg and Hamilton during this period was a joy to see. It’s a shame it only took three years. Even so, this rivalry is not quite dead and buried yet.
The duo owns teams competing in the first Extreme E championship. When the first round goes to Rosberg’s side, it will be interesting to see how the remaining ones turn out for X-prix. In racing in the F1 world, Hamilton will focus on Imola, where he will try to widen the gap between him and Max Verstappen.
Can the Red Bull man do what no one has done since Rosberg retired? Only time can tell.
