With the 2021 season narrowing to six rounds, the season easily brought us one of the most invigorating title fights we’ve seen in a while. Two of the titans of the sport compete against each other; an experience that makes every race phenomenal. Max Verstappen has proven to be a growing influence in the sport, and Lewis Hamilton is cementing himself as an icon. Mercedes tweeted a picture suggesting Verstappen’s move to the team, but what if the forces collided?

When the two arrive at the COTA ahead of the US GP, Max Verstappen drove up in Mercedes. It also had a Red Bull livery. At a rather satirical moment, Mercedes went to Twitter to share the picture. “Max to Mercedes. Confirmed.”

When fans responded with memes and jokes, as was the intent of the post, some asked the question, “What if?”
Though imagination underlies a Hamilton-Verstappen pairing, what if the Red Bull figurehead joined Mercedes’ newest recruit? Having two forerunners of the new F1 generation on one team doesn’t sound bad.
If you look at racing art and talent, a Verstappen-Hamilton pairing could possibly be the pinnacle of the sport. However, the two drivers would not go together individually, and so did many fans. Bad idea aside, maybe a trip to an alternate reality wouldn’t be so bad after all.

It’s old news that the 2014 Silver Arrows were getting closer to the Dutchman. But now that Verstappen’s chart is on an uptrend, what if the rivals were teammates driving in the same car?
As one fan rightly said, “Every race will [be] Spain 2016, if that happens. ”Referring to the infamous crash at Turn 3 between Rosberg and Hamilton on the first lap of the 2016 Spanish GP.
Aggressive collisions on the track were frequent this season. However, the reason this would be a problem if they were teammates is because they have more in common than differences.
Both drivers are extremely eager. While aggression has been linked to Verstappen, Hamilton is also aggressive. You can’t be a seven-time champion and record holder just by playing it on the field. Years of experience in the sport helped the Briton to control these emotions.

Putting Verstappen in Mercedes would make the pairing a force of nature. Though fighting each other would be a chicken game. Max would either threaten Hamilton’s position or be treated like a second driver; Either way, it wouldn’t be the most beneficial for the driver.

Even so, the internal conflict at Mercedes would be worse than what the teams have seen with Nico Rosberg. Toe toxicity would mean the team would lead the qualifying sessions, but on Sunday, collisions and team orders would only fuel the drama and lose positions.

Overall, seeing Verstappen in Milton Keynes outfit and Hamilton in his Brackley outfit is just comforting. Would the season really be as risky as it is without the difference in the teams?
