The car itself is an amazing piece of kit. It was introduced in 2008 and had larger turbochargers than the regular SL 65 AMG with lower weight thanks to the use of lightweight carbon fiber composite parts and the absence of a foldable hardtop roof. This in turn made room for the retractable rear spoiler, which together with the widebody kit gave the Black Series an extremely threatening appearance.
A fascinating fact: Toto Wolff was one of the original development drivers for the SL 65 Black Series back in 2008 when tests were still being carried out on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. If you ask us that makes this example sold in the UK through dealer Tom Hartley Jnr even more special. It’s like Elon Musk sold you his own Model S plaid one day.
Visually, we love the exterior in Obsidian Black with these 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels at the front and 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels at the rear. The car looks brand new and has only driven 3,204 miles (5,156 km), which in some ways makes it more desirable than if it only had delivery miles. Okay, maybe that’s a long way to go, but knowing that someone like Toto Wolff really had fun driving this crazy Benz is a reward in itself for a true motorsport fan.
As for the interior, it has a lot of carbon fiber trim on the center console and door panels, with nappa leather and Alcantara pretty much everywhere else.
In the hands of a good driver, the SL 65 AMG Black Series can properly unleash its 660 hp (670 hp) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque on the road (preferably the racetrack) or maybe the highway where you can theoretically reach 320 km / h. Over shorter distances, it would get you from zero to 60 mph (96 km / h) in just 3.8 seconds.
We would be happy if this car falls into the right hands, although Wolff may be able to make sure that Valtteri Bottas gets it as a parting present at the end of this season. What? Too strict? Just a little cheeky premonition. Sorry, Valtteri.
