After a streak of five Red Bull victories in a row, Mercedes will try to recover at Silverstone with its first significant upgrade since the start of the season.
There was some confusion as to whether it would upgrade its W12, with Toto Wolff initially stating that there would be no further developments.
Shortly thereafter, James Allison confirmed that Mercedes will introduce a minor upgrade for the Silverstone race, despite the team downplaying the importance.
With Lewis Hamilton now 32 points behind Max Verstappen in the drivers’ standings, Mercedes is hoping that this upgrade can turn the season around.

In the Mercedes F1 debriefing on his YouTube channel, Shovlin said, “We’re looking forward to Silverstone, we have a good update there that is pretty exciting. We’re looking forward to the home crowd, there will of course be a lot of Lewis fans and it’s also a track where our car worked well.
“So we have a few days to regroup, analyze the results and turn the cars around and get them ready for the next race in this updated body, but we are optimistic for a better weekend.”

Mercedes has won all but two races at Silverstone since 2013.
Shovlin is confident that the reigning world champion will do better than the Austrian double header compared to Red Bull.
“Well, it’s fair to say that Austria is a track that we’ve struggled with over the years,” added Shovlin. “It’s a difficult track that doesn’t seem to suit our car and we’re trying to understand these issues.
“In contrast, we drove very well at Silverstone and Lewis also enjoys this track very much. Part of that is the layout and the high speed nature, but also the fantastic support he’s got there from the home crowd. So we’re looking forward to it, it will continue to be a challenging race weekend.
“We have to deal with the sprint format but hopefully we can perform better and bring this fight to Red Bull.”
