Lewis Hamilton is still trying to win another Formula 1 championship title – but not everyone at Mercedes is hoping he will be successful.
Max Verstappen currently leads the drivers’ standings with a lead of twelve points with just five races to go. Red Bull hopes that her husband will bring the crown to their first victory since 2013, with Mercedes having won all seven championships since then.
The assumption would be that everyone associated with the organization would want them to continue this run, but apparently they don’t.
Hubert Haupt drives three Mercedes cars in the DTM for his own HRT team, but told Sport1 that outside of his own competition, he has no particular loyalty to Mercedes. As such, he would love to see a change at the top of the stack in Formula One.
“I think it’s time someone other than (Lewis) Hamilton became world champion,” said Haupt.
“In terms of Formula 1, it would be huge for Red Bull to win the title so I hope Verstappen can do it.
“There are a few more tracks that suit Mercedes, but if Max does well in the next two races, he’ll have the nerve to hold on to.”
The upcoming races will take place in Mexico and Brazil, with Hamilton triumphing in Mexico City the last time a race was held there in 2019. Before that year, however, Verstappen had taken victory on the track for consecutive seasons – and the Dutch racer also won in Brazil in 2019, with the 2020 visit being canceled due to the pandemic.
