Mercedes boss Hubert Haupt wants Max Verstappen to beat Lewis Hamilton to the Formula 1 title.

The German, who owns a team in the DTM (German Touring Car Masters) with three Mercedes cars and drives for it, bizarre wants another Silver Arrows racing driver to lose.

The 52-year-old is eager for a new driver to become a master of the sport and should Verstappen triumph it would be the first time since 2013 that a Red Bull driver has won the prestigious trophy.

He told Sport1: “I think the time has come for someone other than (Lewis) Hamilton to become world champions.

“In terms of Formula 1, it would be huge for Red Bull to win the title so I hope Verstappen can do it.

“There are a few more tracks that suit Mercedes, but if Max does well in the next two races he’ll have the nerve to hold on to.”

Haupt praised the pair’s on-track skills as they prepare for the final five races of the season.

“Lewis is used to dealing with such tight situations, this is something new for Verstappen. But the two are at a top level, which is absolutely world class, ”he added.

The two are embroiled in a dazzling title race, with Verstappen currently 12 points ahead of the seven-time champion.

Hamilton is aiming for the all-time record for most championships won by a man – and he currently shares it with Michael Schumacher.

Meanwhile, Verstappen is aiming for his first F1 crown and it will be an accomplishment if he manages to do that considering he is up against one of the best of all time.

The next two Grands Prix will take place in Mexico and Brazil, on two tracks that historically have suited the Red Bull cars better than their Mercedes counterparts.

After winning the most races this season at eight, Verstappen can be at least nineteen points clear if he wins in Mexico next Sunday.
