Toto Wolff has asked F1 title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen to keep the track clean as they battle for the honor of becoming world champions in 2021. The dispute between the two has come to a head in the last few weeks since the collision at Silverstone, in which the Red Bull man retired, and at the Italian Grand Prix, when both had to give up after an accident in the chicane at the end of the pit .
Mercedes boss Wolff compared the incident to a tactical foul in football, hinting that he believed Verstappen had deliberately tried to take out his title rival.
He added that he was afraid of what could happen if the rivalry escalated by the end of the season.
“It’s mainly to blame, we’ve seen that in the past,” said the Austrian.
“I think in football you would say it was a tactical foul. He probably knew that if Lewis stayed ahead it might be the race win.
“They had a high-speed crash at Silverstone, we had one car on top of the other on Lewis’ head, so how far can you go? Maybe next time we’ll have a high-speed crash and land on each other.”
