McLaren unveils new F1 “Performance Center” in Spa

In close cooperation with the motorsport truck specialist Schuler, McLaren has redesigned its work space behind the pit garages with a new facility.

Not only is McLaren making sure its infrastructure better meets the needs of a current F1 team, but it is also enabling McLaren to reduce the number of trucks it needs for the races to just four – from the six it drives for every race brought.

When team boss Andreas Seidl spoke about the new facility in Spa-Francorchamps on Friday, he said the engineering center was part of a major investment push from McLaren.

“We wanted to have a unit again that correctly represented our brand, the team, from a marketing point of view,” he said.

“We also tried to find a more sustainable solution: more sustainable in terms of finances, but also in terms of carbon footprint. With Schuler, we have again managed to reduce the number of trucks. ” [we need] thanks to a very innovative solution that has been developed.

“And then of course we wanted to offer the team a working environment for the European races that is state-of-the-art and enables them to perform at their best.

“I am very happy to see it step by step now that we have upgraded our motorhome, the Brands Center, to what is known as the Team Hub.”

McLaren’s new engineering center enables the Woking team to make better use of the space in the paddock where trucks were previously used to store spare parts in the lower sections and engineering offices above.

The use of such advanced facilities has been taken over by a number of other teams in the paddock, with Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari all building similar facilities over a GP weekend to improve their working environment.

McLaren’s push comes with the team knowing they need to get more out of their car in the second half of the season, now that the campaign upgrade plan is nearing its end.

Seidl said that there will only be a few small further developments on the MCL35M in the next races.

“In any case, we’re getting closer to the final adjustments to the car in the next few races,” he said. “In the area of the brake ducts, we have brought back some small upgrades that we will carry out today.

“And of course we will continue to try to get even more out of the package by understanding the package better and working with the drivers in the simulator to get the most out of the car.”
