McLaren announced in the run-up to Monaco that the entire race weekend would be given a special paint job, with the iconic powder blue and orange colors of the Golf being carried over with a retro design.
Drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris wore special racing suits and helmets over the weekend in Monaco and celebrated the history of golf in motorsport as part of their partnership with McLaren.
The design proved to be a huge hit with fans, leading McLaren to create a special range of goods that sold out quickly, and for many, demanding that the Golf livery be used more frequently in the future.
But McLaren F1 boss Seidl said the current plan is for the design to remain one-off for the time being.
“With regard to the paintwork, I would just like to say at the moment that it is clearly a one-off paint job at the moment,” said Seidl.
“It was planned for the legendary race here to celebrate the historic partnership with Gulf that dates back to the 1960s with Bruce McLaren.
“That was the idea behind this project between Gulf and us. That’s all I can say for now about future plans.”

McLaren’s golf livery became the latest part of a rare but welcome trend in F1 by teams redesigning their liveries for a single race.
Ferrari celebrated its 1000th Grand Prix in Mugello last year with a retro color scheme, while Mercedes celebrated its 125th anniversary in Hockenheim in 2019 with a paint job that pays homage to its origins.

Both Ferrari and Mercedes fought on their festive weekends, making McLaren’s attack on the podium with Norris a break with the “curse” that surrounds one-off liveries.
Norris was impressed with the design and called it “really cool”.
“It’s unique,” he said. “The pictures look pretty good too. It’s just cool to be part of the history of golf and also to have it as one of the first liveries to do something different.”
