Masi denies Red Bull’s preference over changes to the F1 rear wing

Masi denies Red Bull's preference over changes to the F1 rear wing

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton was robbed of his top spot in qualifying on Friday after the DRS of his car failed the post-session inspection.

As a result, the seven-time world champion had to start the sprint race on Saturday from position 20.

Mercedes boss Wolff described the decision as “tough” and said teams have in the past been given permission to repair defective car parts at Parc Ferme if the problems could trigger an investigation.

Rival Red Bull was allowed to carry out repairs to its rear wing in previous races in the USA and Mexico.

The stewards’ decision in Brazil enraged Wolff, saying in the past “sometimes there was a buffer of common sense that didn’t exist yesterday or today”.

But Masi denied that Red Bull received preferential treatment, saying there was no inconsistency in the way the FIA worked.

“All reports that Jo [Bauer] when our technical delegate sends out before the race, you clearly explain whether repairs or replacements are possible under Parc Ferme conditions, “said Masi.

“And that’s clearly listed so that everyone can read it. So from this perspective, yes, we have regular inquiries, of course it is even more during a sprint qualifying weekend because the Parc Ferme starts.

“From our point of view, we treat every single request in the same way, consistently, and look at every single one.

“The thing is, when we see something with the team being systematic across a series of events, we ask them to change that part permanently.

“So there’s a whole lot of things in there. So no, I don’t think there are any inconsistencies.”

Masi acknowledged that the teams and drivers vying for the title are doing “anything and everything” while the championship battle heats up.

In the race, both Hamilton and title rival Max Verstappen got off the road at Turn 4 when the Brit seemed to have been largely displaced by Verstappen.

The Dutchman also received a black and white warning flag for excessive weaving in front of his rival.

The hectic Interlagos weekend came after a number of on-track incidents that the couple was involved in, as well as a lot of bitterness between the two teams off-track.

“It’s a fight for the lead in the race, a very close and intense fight for the world championship,” said Masi. “And I think everything we saw between the two teams this weekend just contributes to that mix.

“Once you have an intense championship battle, you have both drivers and teams, they will absolutely try to do whatever they can to win from their point of view and understandably so.”

Masi insisted that he and the stewards treat everyone equally.

“Every competitor, every driver is treated equally and fairly at all times. If you get a penalty, of course everyone feels treated unfairly. So that’s part of our role.”
