Aston Martin has suffered another blow after the FIA this week denied a right to review Sebastian Vettel’s disqualification from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Team boss Otmar Szafnauer described the decision as “disappointing” as the team is now considering its position after Vettel was eliminated in Budapest, 18 points behind second place.

The result means that Lewis Hamilton will keep his lead of eight instead of six points over Max Verstappen in the drivers’ standings after the seven-time world champion was promoted to second place thanks to the disqualification.

Vettel was hit by the penalty just hours after standing cheering on the second step of the podium because Aston Martin did not provide the required 1 liter gasoline sample after the race.

However, after the team announced their intention to review, the team filed a case with the stewards on Monday to try to overturn the decision on their numbers.

After meeting the stewards on Monday, Aston claimed that a “fuel system failure” meant they did not have the required amount after the race.

However, the FIA concluded that the new evidence was “not relevant” to the requirement to provide 1.0 liter of fuel.

Szafnauer, Aston CEO & Team Principal, said: “Sebastian drove brilliantly in Hungary and we are delighted that we have been given the opportunity to showcase significant new evidence that we have discovered since the race.

“We believed the evidence we presented was relevant and we showed the FIA that he should have been reinstated if he was disqualified.

“Unfortunately the FIA took a different view and despite the fact that the accuracy of our new evidence was not contested, Sebastian’s disqualification was confirmed on the basis that the new evidence was not considered ‘relevant’.

“This is disappointing and we are now going to review our position for the full appeal process.”

Aston Martin added, “There has been and is no indication that Vettel’s Aston Martin Cognizant Formula One

Formula 1 is currently in the summer break, and racing will be resumed at the end of August with the Belgian Grand Prix.

Verstappen wants to recover from two difficult weekends with Red Bull, during which the Dutchman lost the lead in the drivers’ championship for the first time since Monaco.

Mercedes has also moved forward in the constructors’ championship.
