Lewis Hamilton is one of the best and most successful athletes Britain has ever produced.

With a remarkable seven world championship titles – and possibly the eighth on the way this weekend – his outstanding Formula 1 career has given him the corresponding celebrity status.

Hamilton made a name for himself when he entered the F1 scene with McClaren in 2007 and has since broken a number of records in his professional career while also becoming the most decorated driver in F1 history.

In Formula 1, Hamilton holds the records for most victories (102), pole positions (102) and podium positions (180) and has won a joint record of seven world championship titles.

The 36-year-old drove for McClaren until 2013 when he signed for the Mercedes F1 team, which has made him one of the richest athletes in the world since signing his contract in 2015. He has developed an estimated total fortune of around £ 280 million.

Winning his first Canadian Grand Prix in 2007 paved the way for Hamilton to have a hugely successful career on and off the track as he is now considered the highest paid F1 driver in the history of the sport.

His previous career income has come to a whopping $ 400 million (£ 300 million) over the 14 seasons he has spent with McClaren and Mercedes, leading to the belief that he is the richest British athlete of all time.

Hamilton initially signed his first deal with Mercedes in 2013, but with his new contract, which he got in 2015 to stay until the end of the 2018 season, he really started making more money than ever before.

The new deal was reportedly worth more than £ 100m over three years, while being named the UK’s richest athlete that same year with an estimated net worth of £ 88m.

By 2018, that net worth had risen to $ 159 million.

In 2020, Hamilton was named the Richest British Sports Star in History on the Sunday Times Rich List after his net worth was estimated at £ 224 million.

Bonuses included in his deals during the year have also had a significant impact on his career income and total net worth, with up to £ 5 million from add-ons.

Career aside, Hamilton makes an estimated additional £ 8 million a year advertising with brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Gran Turismo Sport, Bell Helmets, MV Augusta Motorcycles, Monster Energy, Pune, IWC, Sony, Bose and Petronas.

The racing star lives in Monaco and also owns three other properties in New York and London worth a total of 67 million US dollars and in Geneva.

His passion for cars and fashion takes up part of his free time, in which he invests a lot.

The highest paid British sports star says it all, so Hamilton should be fine even if he retires from Formula 1 racing for the rest of his life.
