In one of the most expensive Formula 1 cars ever auctioned, a McLaren-Mercedes racing car that was driven by Lewis Hamilton in the 2010 F1 season has been put up for sale by RM Sotheby Auctions and is expected to collect around 5 million U.S. dollar.
According to reports, the MP4-25A F1 car is currently stationed at McLaren’s headquarters in Woking, England, but could soon find a new home if purchased during the auction process. Obviously, the winner could look forward to a valuable possession powered by a 2.4 liter naturally aspirated V8 gasoline engine. At only 620 kilos, the F1 car has a monocoque made of carbon fiber honeycomb composite material. “The McLaren Mercedes is a car that can still be driven and supported by the original factory teams as part of each heritage department,” explains Sothe
F1 cars in auctions are a rarity that this model could also be hotly contested for. Hamilton’s F1 cars for Mercedes-AMG, his current employers, are largely owned by the team. “While customer confidentiality precludes the exact disclosure of the number of privately owned people, it is assumed that there are only a few,” the listing says. “Formula 1 and RM Sotheby’s developed the groundbreaking concept to sell this incredible car live while it is driven at over 250 km / h on the historic Silverstone circuit.”
Hamilton had finished the 2010 season in fourth place with 240 points. That included three wins and nine podiums in total. It was Sebastian Vettel in his Red Bull who took the crown this year, followed by Fernando Alonso and Mark Webber.
