Hamilton finished second behind rival Max Verstappen at the Mexican Grand Prix last night. In the run-up to the race, the Mercedes driver called for “respect” on race weekends this week after Verstappen made an unsavory gesture to the Briton at the US Grand Prix last week. The Dutchman also called Hamilton a “stupid idiot” after the two remarkably ridden side by side in a practice session in Austin. During the FIA press conference on Thursday, Hamilton said, “I’ve been here a long time, it’s not my first rodeo. “I think respect has to be at the core of everything.
“When I think about it and hear the things that come out of the mouths of the drivers, I think that we see children who are inspired and guided by us.
“A lot of things have been said, which is definitely not good for young children watching.
“For me, I just try to stay positive and stay calm and again just be respectful of the drivers I’m fighting against.
“If I have a name in my head of what I think, I don’t share it. But it’s pretty easy for me. You laugh about it and move forward. “
Hamilton may call for calm, but last year in Russia the seven-time world champion lost his composure in a rare tirade.
After he was punished by the stewards for two illegal training starts in Sochi, he hit the FIA - F1 umbrella organization, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile.
Hamilton criticized the decision as a “bull ****” adding: “I’m pretty sure no one has ever received two five-second penalties for something so ridiculous.
“I didn’t put anyone in danger, I’ve done this on a million tracks over the years and have never been interviewed. But it is to be expected. You are trying to stop me.
“Whenever a team is at the top, you have to look carefully. Everything about our car is checked, checked twice, checked three times.
“They also change rules like the motor modes [believed to have favoured Mercedes in qualifying], so there are a lot of things that they put in the way to keep the race exciting. It feels like we’re fighting uphill. “
At the time, Hamilton was chasing Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 race wins and could have rivaled the German’s without the penalty.

In a chaotic race, Lando Norris McLaren was leading until just four laps from the checkered flag when the rain hit the track.
Norris chose to stay outside while Hamilton pitted for intermediate tires, a move that should prove to be a feat.
Hamilton took his 100th win and called it a “magical moment”.
He said after the race: “Of course it took me a long time to get to 100 and I wasn’t even sure if it would come.
“It’s a magical moment. I could only have dreamed of still being here, with the chance to win these races and racing with such phenomenal talent so late in my career.
“I’m so proud of everything we’ve done. This is a special moment for everyone who attended. I am incredibly grateful for the support I received. “
