Lewis Hamilton sees the “advantages” of Mercedes-Sim

Lewis Hamilton sees the "advantages" of Mercedes-Sim

Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton is becoming a convert to the benefits of the Mercedes simulator which helped him a lot at Silverstone.

While many drivers find the simulation helpful in learning how their car works on certain routes, the seven-time world champion is rather reluctant.

Hamilton said earlier this year he was “not interested in the simulator” and did about 20 laps a year in it, but before the Austrian Grand Prix he said he tried a little harder to discover more power in the W12.

Immediately after setting the fastest time in qualifying at the British Grand Prix, the 36-year-old announced that he was still in the simulation on Friday morning, as free practice was only in the afternoon and the advantages of the Mercedes factory were only just down the road.

It came at a time when the seven-time consecutive constructors’ champions are doing everything in their power to climb back to the top of Red Bull, who had won five spin races before Hamilton’s eighth triumph at Silverstone.

Regarding how the simulation grows on Hamilton, Mercedes-F1 co-owner and team boss Wolff of Formula 1 said: “Yes, the simulator was not his favorite tool in the past.

“But I think we took it to a pretty good level and made it top in class, and he’s started to see the benefits of that.

“This fight is so tough that you only have to grab every single marginal win, and that’s why we’ve made progress together to better understand the car using the simulator’s tool as well.”

It wasn’t just sim work that spurred Hamilton at his home Grand Prix, as Mercedes also unpacked a few aerodynamic upgrades that reduced Red Bull’s pace lead.

“The upgrades weren’t big, but adding them up all the time can make a difference,” said Wolff. “We’re still a little underperforming, there’s no doubt about that. I think it would have been pretty similar at race pace.

“[But] we have halved the deficit [to Red Bull] as far as performance goes and you just have to mobilize everything in your arsenal and that’s something [Lewis] does as a driver and we as a team.

“There will be trickier ones, there will be better ones, but to get these big points [at Silverstone] is important.”
