Strategies play a vital role in winning races and championships in F1. A team needs to make quick decisions by analyzing the situation during a race and reacting quickly to situations. This means that the team in the paddock and the driver in the car have to be coordinated for the strategy to work. While most drivers obey team orders without question, some drivers like Lewis Hamilton have the power to change strategies.

2016 Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg had an interesting take on strategy calls. The world champion explained how to master the Baku street circuit when he described the circuit and some of its corners as “one of the most dangerous of the season”.

During a Q / A session on his latest YouTube video, a user asked Rosberg, “How much power do drivers have on team strategy calls?”
The explanation of the former Mercedes world champion was very interesting.
“It’s just so difficult as a driver to keep track of things because the team strategy depends so much on where everyone else is on the track,” said Rosberg.
He went on by mentioning how Lewis Hamilton influenced team strategies.
“As a driver, like Lewis, you can give a strong opinion. Lewis even managed to change the team’s strategy at times. With the words: ‘Hey, my tires are good, let me go, I want to drive for a long time.’ But it’s very rare and very difficult because the team just has so much more information. “

Will Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton recover from the Monaco GP?
Mercedes had a terrible Monaco Grand Prix; neither driver was able to impress on the streets of Monte-Carlo. Lewis Hamilton started in seventh and ended in seventh and Bottas had to give up after the pit stop accident.
The Silver Arrows were definitely not in their A game. You weren’t fast enough on the track and not alert enough in the paddock to make strategic decisions. The race passed them within a few laps.

During the race, Team Hamilton had called for a pit stop to bring Gasly to P6, but in the end he lost 3 places to Vettel, Perez and Gasly and dropped to 7th place. The strategy of undercutting has always backfired in the Principality, but in their zeal they have missed their strategy.
DIVE DEEPER
Baku is another street circuit that Mercedes and Bottas won in 2019. So it would be interesting to see how the world champions will use strategic decisions to succeed.
