Lewis Hamilton lives in “constant fear” of COVID as the F1 season peaks

Lewis Hamilton lives in "constant fear" of COVID as the F1 season peaks

Lewis Hamilton says it is strange to him that some athletes are now firmly behind the COVID-19 crisis.

It’s 20 months after the pandemic outbreak and now well into the mass vaccination campaign around the world, some COVID restrictions are finally starting to ease in Formula One. However, seven-time world champion Hamilton says he is fighting for the 2021 title while remaining in constant fear of the virus.

“I’m still at home alone, but thanks to the experiences from last year, this is now a little easier to cope with,” Hamlton from the European media company Auto Motor und Sport is quoted as saying. “But you live in constant fear.”

Hamilton, 36, already had COVID. He tested positive after last year’s Bahrain Grand Prix in November and the virus kept him away from the Sakhir Grand Prix on December 6th. “

Hamilton now says the fear is that another COVID infection will mean the game for the championship. He is eight points behind Max Verstappen in the championship and missing a race on a positive test would almost certainly end his chances of an eighth title.

“For the people around me it doesn’t matter if they miss a day at work,” said Mercedes driver Hamilton. “But it can be crucial for us drivers. I see other athletes who are super relaxed about it and who don’t seem to mind when they get it. That feels strange to me.”

Hamilton says there is much to fear as Formula 1 begins easing restrictions.

“Last year it was only six months because of the short season, but now we have almost a full year,” he said. “The rules have been relaxed a bit in some areas, which makes it easier to be sloppy and get into trouble. So you always have to keep it in the back of your mind.

“My way of dealing with social contacts is very different now than it was in the past. Now I keep my distance from everyone and always hold my breath when people are around. “
