F1 star Sir Lewis Hamilton launches a partnership to promote black teacher recruitment in science, technology and math (STEM) subjects.
The initiative follows the findings of the Hamilton Commission report compiled by the seven-time F1 world champion to tackle the lack of diversity in British motorsport.
It concluded that out of 500,000 teachers in England, only 2% of teachers were black background and that 46% of schools in the country have no racial teachers at all.
The new two-year program, launched by Hamilton’s Mission 44 program, is run in partnership with the educational organization Teach First and aims to explore different methods to identify best practices in hiring Black STEM teachers.

The aim of the program is to support the recruitment and training of 150 black STEM teachers to work in schools for disadvantaged communities in England.
In a published statement, Hamilton, 36, said the project is “another step in removing barriers that prevent young black students from engaging” with STEM, as outlined in the Hamilton Commission’s report.
He continued: “We know that representation and role models are important in all areas of society, but especially when it comes to supporting the development of young people.”

The project was launched today on UNESCO’s World Teachers Day and coincides with Black History Month, and the Mercedes driver hopes it will ultimately lead to more diversity in the classrooms.
“By creating this partnership, which focuses on finding the best way to attract black talent to STEM apprenticeships, we hope to create a framework that the education industry can implement in a broader sense,” he continued.
“We hope that other organizations that recruit teachers will support our mission and help us in our mission to see more diversity in the classroom.”

Mission 44 was a foundation established by Hamilton in 2017 with the aim of supporting, nurturing and empowering young people from underrepresented groups in the UK to thrive.
The foundation’s official Twitter account added, “There are not enough black STEM teachers in England. Almost half of schools in England do not have ethnic minority teachers in their classrooms. We’re excited to partner with us to recruit and train more Black STEM teachers. ”
In September, Hamilton paid the bill for several aspiring young black designers to attend the 2021 Met Gala in New York to put their work in the spotlight.
