After the Mercedes flop in Monaco, Lewis Hamilton should have taken on more responsibility than making “pretentious” comments.
This is the view of former Formula 1 racing driver and Dutch Grand Prix promoter Jan Lammers, who believed that the drive of the seven-time world champion to seventh place in Monte Carlo not only had a significant impact on the team’s performance.
Even though the pole-sitter Charles Leclerc was unable to start the Monaco Grand Prix, Hamilton still occupied the position in which he qualified. This seemed to be due to two reasons: Overtaking on this track was almost impossible and a failed strategy decision to call the British early on about hard tires.
In addition to expressing frustration over the team radio, Hamilton later said it was a “really, really bad performance” from Mercedes all weekend – with Valtteri Bottas’ race ruined by a botched pit stop that got a wheel stuck and forced him to retire.
But Lammers, who drove in 23 F1 races, most of them for the Shadow team in 1979, said Hamilton should have shown more humility than shouting the team like he did.
“I think his behavior is pretty inconsistent,” Lammers told RacingNews365.com. “We give him all credit if he wins or takes pole position.
“The fans and the media are full of praise and praise for him, but if things don’t go well on a weekend, he blames his team. It’s not fancy. “

The 62-year-old Lammers, who has twice won the Le Mans 24 Hours and its Daytona equivalent, believes Hamilton should analyze his performance on Saturday.
“It went wrong for Hamilton in qualifying,” he added. “He can complain about the team and the strategy etc, but if he’d done a little better on Saturday the team wouldn’t have had this problem either.
“So the suggestion that he couldn’t have done better himself was pretty presumptuous. That was just the wrong comment and he didn’t make any fans. “
It is, of course, to be borne in mind that Lammers has a compatriot fighting for the Hamilton World Championship. Max Verstappen now has a four point lead in the title race.
And unsurprisingly, Lammers describes the “max factor” as something that puts pressure on the reigning champion.
“So far he has [Hamilton] was exemplary and comfortable in the competition with Max, but you get to know him when he has a bad weekend, ”said Lammers.
“He had a bad weekend, himself and the team. If only he’d qualified better, the team wouldn’t have been so nervous.
“And the fact is that he just left it [Valtteri] Bottas drive him to ruin. He criticizes the team for bad decisions because of his own bad qualifying. I think that is very wrong. “
