Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo were among those Formula 1 drivers who kept their spirits high as the Belgian Grand Prix was postponed several times on Sunday afternoon. Heavy rain in Belgium made the track conditions dangerous, with visibility around the track being particularly poor for the drivers due to the spray from the cars in front.

During the delays, Hamilton was spotted getting out of his car for a quick toilet break at a moment.

After returning to the grid, he joked on the Mercedes team radio that the toilet he had traveled to had been used shortly before him and had been left in a less than ideal condition.

The seven-time world champion said: “I’m glad I went to the bathroom. Somebody dropped a crazy bomb on the one I went to. The worst thing ever. It will haunt me for a lifetime. .. “

Ricciardo also wanted to laugh on the team radio and joked that the race was a milestone in his Formula 1 career.

To his McLaren box he said, “I don’t know if you know this about me, it’s my 200th Grand Prix. A big deal.”

They weren’t the only ones who shared humorously with their teams. AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly joked about the wet conditions.

He said, “If you can get me some sausages to grill … will the race be two more hours?”

His engineer then asked, “Are you thinking about your dinner?” To which Gasly replied, “I think we might need some lights.”

The rain meant a 30-minute delay before the warm-up lap could even begin, and it was raining heavily over the Spa track.

After the introductory lap around 2.30 p.m., the race was canceled with the red flag and the cars returned to the grid to wait for the OK to start the race.

That came after Hamilton said on the warm-up lap, “I really can’t see anything behind it.”

McLaren’s Lando Norris said similarly, “It’s pretty terrible. I can barely see the car in front of me. Quite a lot of aquaplaning too.”

After deciding to bring out the red flags, Ricciardo described it as “the right decision”, while alpine rider Fernando Alonso said: “There is no way. We cannot race.”

Sergio Perez fell victim to the conditions when he crashed his Red Bull on the way to the starting grid.

The Mexican racing driver slipped into the guardrails during a tour of Les Combes in order to secure his place on the starting grid.

Red Bull posted on Twitter: “Not the start we wanted. Checo slipped into the wall at Turn 6 on the way to the starting grid and couldn’t continue.”

But at 2:45 p.m. there was a Red Bull message to race director Michael Masi, in which the team argued that Perez was allowed to compete in the race.

That was because the racing delays gave them time to fix Perez’s car, and they argued that the race didn’t have to start at that point as only the warm-up lap was over.

“Let me get back to that,” Masi told Red Bull’s Jonathan Wheatley after confirming that he would speak to the stewards.
