F1 Grand Prix of Abu Dhabi - Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen on the podium.

In an interview with Sky Sports F1, Karun Chandhok spoke about the loss that Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff are likely to feel at the moment. Mercedes left a sour taste after Max Verstappen won the driver’s title for the Briton due to a failed safety car restart. The analyst believes Hamilton will return next year to again battle for an historic eighth title win. He said:

“Personally, I would be very surprised if we don’t see either of them [Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton] next year in Bahrain. I think Lewis, yes, he’s injured and Toto is injured and feeling a little disaffected with the sport, but I think ultimately they want to come back and pursue the goal of becoming world champions for the eighth time. Lewis definitely does. I still think we’ll see him on the grid next year. “

Chandhok took the opportunity to comment on a very unusual safety car restart at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The safety car restart meant that Verstappen overtook Hamilton on the last lap. He said:

“What Lewis Hamilton and Toto Wolff couldn’t change was that Nicholas Latifi had an accident before the end of the race. He had an accident and the normal procedure in this case is to drive a safety car. That’s just bad luck for Lewis. ” . I think what annoys them is the way the last lap went, when only certain cars were allowed to drive themselves out, which was very unusual. “

Lewis Hamilton accepts controversial loss like a champion

Although Lewis Hamilton led the race from the start, he narrowly lost to Max Verstappen due to confusion over safety car procedures. However, the Brit was seen at Parc Fermé congratulating and hugging the Dutchman and demonstrating his attitude towards the championship title even in the event of a defeat.

Lewis’ father Anthony was also seen greeting Max and his father Jos in the Red Bull garage.

Experts like David Coulthard and Nico Rosberg share the same opinion as Karun Chandhok that next year the 36-year-old will return hungrier than ever to win the title again. Coulthard said:

“He’s already committed for another two years. He’s a team person, he’s committed to this team, and he’ll be there next year trying to win his eighth world title.”
