Jolyon Palmer believes Mercedes made a mistake in their F1 driver line-up for the 2022 season

Former Formula 1 driver Jolyon Palmer believes Mercedes made a mistake in choosing George Russell to drive for them from the 2022 season. Palmer believes the world champions have missed the opportunity to sign a formidable Lando Norris to work with Lewis Hamilton.

When Jack Nicholls, the host of the F1: Checkered Flag podcast, claimed he would have picked Norris over Russell if he was in charge of Mercedes, Palmer agreed, saying:

“I’m driving with Lando (Norris).” “It was unbelievable how he stopped Lewis Hamilton at the end of the race in Sochi until he lost his strategy and the choice of tires.” Never won a race, a seven-time world champion in having a Mercedes on the back of the neck then it starts raining and he’s still off the road a few times, crawling around but keep Hamilton, we all know how good he is in the wet, it was behind him really legendary, I think of Norris. “

Mercedes decided to fire Valtteri Bottas after five years for the 2022 season and promoted their junior driver George Russell from Williams. Russell joined the Mercedes junior driver program in 2017 and then clinched the GP3 and F2 titles in consecutive seasons.

George Russell knows how to win

Incidentally, Russell beat his F1 drivers Lando Norris and Alexander Albon on his way to the F2 title in 2018 and rose to F1 along with the couple the following year.

While Russell was stuck at the back of the grid with an uncompetitive Williams team, Lando Norris led the McLaren team this season and was often a thorn in the side of top teams.

The arrival of George Russell in 2022 has the potential for fireworks at Mercedes

Since Nico Rosberg’s surprising resignation at the end of the 2016 season, Mercedes has had a strong and harmonious driver line-up, which has helped the German team to five more constructor titles.

However, with the departure of Valtteri Bottas and the imminent arrival of George Russell, the Brackley team bosses have cause for concern about potential conflicts in the coming seasons.

During his entire time on the team, Bottas failed to overcome a serious championship challenge against seven-time world champion team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Instead, the Finn has often played the “team game” loyally and helped Hamilton against Sebastian Vettel and Ferrari.

Meanwhile, George Russell is often touted as one of the best of the “next generation of talent” and is charged with leading the battle against Hamilton. While Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was generally in favor of having Russell fight Hamilton, he has also spoken out in favor of the need to maintain a “healthy relationship” within the team. Last month, Wolff even claimed that the Russell may need “conditioning” to adapt to Mercedes’ demands.
