James Allison has been promoted to Mercedes F1 CTO, with a focus on 2022

Elliot and Allison previously worked together at Renault. The new technical director began his career at McLaren before moving to Renault. He joined Mercedes in 2012 as Head of Aerodynamics and most recently as Technology Director.

“It is a great opportunity to become the technical director of a team like Mercedes and I have to thank Toto and our company for trusting me to make the step into this new role,” said Elliott.

“It is an incredible privilege to be part of this team and I know that leadership at all levels of the company will be critical to our future success. I can’t wait to get started and master the many exciting technical challenges that lie ahead of us over the next few months and years. “

Team boss Toto Wolff, whose own future with Mercedes was put to the test last season before signing a three-year contract to remain as team boss, said the reshuffle was still in the works for some time and that the move would get Mercedes off the ground for the best possible start into the new F1 era in the next season.

“Since joining Mercedes in 2017, James has been an exceptional technical leader on our team and has made a tremendous contribution to our performance: He combines great passion and determination with in-depth expertise and exceptional moral character.

“We have known for some time that his time as Technical Director will come to an end this year, and I am delighted that we have been able to shape this new role so that he stays in our motorsport family. He will be an important sparring partner for me in the next few years and I know that we still have a lot to achieve together. We often say that the organization is a dynamic organism and that we must continually adapt if we are to really thrive.

“Effective succession planning was one of our team’s strengths. I’m very excited to announce Mike in his new role as Technical Director. We met in early 2013 when I joined the team and have since spent many hours talking about the team and how it was developing. Mike has gone from being our head of aerodynamics to being a technical director.

“Together with an exceptional group of high-level technical executives, we are in the best possible position for the next era of sport.”
