“It is not normal to stray from something you love” – James Allison became Mercedes’ chief technical officer after handing over the role of technical director to Mike Elliott.
After great success with the Mercedes F1 team as technical director, James Allison is now CTO. He is being replaced by Mike Elliott, who is leaving his role as technology director.
Incidentally, today is James Allison’s last day as Technical Director.

When asked on the F1 Nation podcast how he feels about breaking away from the daily routine of the F1 team, Allison described this as a “mixed feeling” as he really enjoyed the role that brought a lot of success in the form of titles .
At the same time, he is confident that as the new technical director, Elliott will do a good job and be more successful. Elliott’s first challenge would be to battle Red Bull as they try to win their fifth F1 title this season.
“I have very mixed feelings about it. This is by far the best, most exciting, and fulfilling job I’ve had in my career, and I loved every moment of being Technical Director here for the four seasons leading up to and the half-season.
“The voluntary decision to pass this on to a successor is therefore an odd experience, as it is not normal to move away from something you love.
“But the next one who comes, Mike, will still take the baton from me and accelerate it. He will bring strength and dedication. I am sure the team will be served very well. His technical judgment and leadership values and behaviors are second to none.
“It is a great pleasure to see Mike has his chance and to know that the team under him is being well served and it is a great pleasure to know that the handover is in a nice, organized way and where I am can feel. ”m to step away with the team in good shape – away from the technical management.
“In doing so, I can direct my mind to my new challenge, to my new role in which I hope to continue to be helpful and useful, but where the nature of the role is less immediate and less visceral than the role of technical director.”
