Fernando Alonso returned to Formula 1 with Alpine in 2021 and managed to grab one podium so far, at the Qatar Grand Prix. For now, the two-time world champion has not really managed to get involved in the battles up front, but that does not mean that Alonso as a driver is still among the best on the current grid.
Martin Brundle stated a while ago that in his opinion Alonso is still among the best drivers in the field. According to the Sky Sports commentator, the 40-year-old Spaniard would have also competed for the world championship in the Mercedes (of 2021, ed.) along with Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.

Alonso agrees with Brundle
Alonso, when asked, let GP Racing know that he agrees with the words of former F1 driver Brundle. “Obviously, if not, I was not here. I’m not here to travel around the world. You’re here because you trust [in your abilities] and you have your self-confidence and belief you can do well and drive well.”

In Bahrain, there was no more in it than a ninth place finish, while in Saudi Arabia he crashed out with which a handful of points were lost. The DNF was due to a problem with the power source. Alpine, as a factory team, had hoped to connect with the absolute top teams this season, but that is certainly not the case.
