Highest-paid drivers of the 2021 Formula 1 season revealed: Is Lewis Hamilton paying the highest salary at Mercedes F1?

Lando Norris agrees with Fernando Alonso's claim about Mercedes F1 in 2021

In 2021, Formula 1 introduced a revolutionary new reform – budget caps. This was a move that limited the amount of money a team could spend in a season to close the gap between teams at the top of the table and those on the other side.

But one thing that wasn’t included in the budget cap was the driver’s salary. This meant teams could spend as much money as they wanted or as the drivers wanted in terms of salaries.

So let’s take a look at the five highest paid drivers of 2021.

Who are the five highest paid Formula 1 drivers?

5. Sebastian Vettel

Despite a downward spiral in terms of form in recent years, Vettel remains one of the most marketable drivers in 2021. And made money from it 15 million dollars in salary at Aston Martin.

4. Sergio Perez

If there’s a rider who understands endurance, it’s Sergio Perez. After facing an uncertain future in the sport in late 2020, the Mexican was signed by Red Bull to increase his challenge against Mercedes in 2021.

And that’s exactly what Perez did, and more. Although he was signed for a salary of $5 million, projections that include bonuses from race wins and performance put his tally as high as $100,000 18 million dollars in 2021.

3.Fernando Alonso

The Spaniard made his comeback at Alpine this season and it didn’t take long for his class and talent to show. Alonso was instrumental in Alpine’s midfield hopes of a higher placement and, together with teammate Esteban Ocon, he did just that.

He took a salary from home 25 million dollars, but bonuses from his podium finish in Qatar or the defensive masterclass in Hungary should mean he deserves more.

2.Max Verstappen

If there’s one thing Max Verstappen missed in 2021, it’s this list. The champion and his exploits on the track over the past season need no introduction. Verstappen is arguably the biggest star in F1 today, earning a salary of $25 million.

But on top of that, it was predicted that he would earn twice as many bonuses. At least that’s what Max Verstappen earned 42 million dollars in 2021.

1.Lewis Hamilton

The other protagonist of the championship and arguably the GOAT in F1, Lewis Hamilton had one of the best seasons of his stellar career. And while he didn’t win the championship, nothing can belittle the incredible fight he’s put up all year.

A fight that justified his $55 million salary. And as for projected earnings, Forbes predicted Hamilton more than earned $62 million in 2021.
