The seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton hopes to be able to sign a new contract with Mercedes before the August break.
The 36-year-old Briton is out of contract as of the end of this season after his final one-year extension was announced in February but he has announced that he will continue.
“We never want to be in the position we were in January and February. It ruined my whole winter and I’m sure it wasn’t helpful for Toto, ”said the championship leader, referring to team principal Toto Wolff.
“Of course we don’t have to rush, but I think we have to be sensible and start talks,” he added after winning the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.
“They’re very complex, it’s never a super easy process, so hopefully we can get started soon as long as it doesn’t interfere with the actual job. We have 19 races left but it would be great to fix something before the break. “
Formula 1 has its European summer break between the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest on August 1st and the Belgian race in Spa-Francorchamps on August 29th.
Wolff said on May 1 that he hoped to start contract negotiations soon after Hamilton, who is now 14 points ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, to signal that he is interested in continuing to race. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin)
