The 2022 season marked the end of Mercedes’ eight-year domination of Formula One. However, the German team is not giving up and intends to come back stronger than ever next season to stop the momentum of Red Bull and Max Verstappen. Indeed Hamilton means to exact revenge for 2021.
After eight seasons of dominance, Mercedes no longer had the best car in the field in 2022. Dominated by Red Bull and Ferrari, the German marque’s team was never able to compete for the title. However, Mercedes never gave up and made clear progress throughout the season, culminating in George Russell’s first career win in Brazil.
Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, ended the season without a win for the first time since joining F1 in 2007. However, 2023 will be very different than Toto Wolff recently announced.
Speaking in Abu Dhabi, the final race of the 2022 season, Wolff sets out his plans.
“We didn’t let go of anything. The engine has worked very well and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. On the chassis side there were more bad moments than good, but the good ones were spectacular, like a week ago [in Brazil]and they made us realize how good it can be.
“Now we are doing everything to move forward for next year. It’s difficult, it hurts, it’s normal to feel like this, but next year we’ll be back,” said the Mercedes boss.
Enthusiasm shared by Lewis Hamilton it seems.
Hamilton ambitious for 2023
“I’m really excited about 2023.” says Hamilton,
“The last few years have been so difficult for so many people in the world, so many people fighting the war and so many other things.
“I hope that something will push us to understand that we need to be more compassionate and kind to each other. A new year to be better, a new year to climb, to keep fighting and to unite more.
“And it’s another chance to fight for a world championship,” said the seven-time world champion, still determined to break Michael Schumacher’s record and take revenge for losing the 2021 F1 championship.
