George Russell will finally get a Mercedes F1 chance in November 2021

Young George Russell with Lewis Hamilton in 2009

In a sport like Formula 1, where money speaks louder than any other good, common sense does not often prevail. But in the case of George Russell and Mercedes, Formula 1 could have a huge boon after the German manufacturer announced it would use a British super team from 2022.

Russell will line up next year alongside seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton in a Silver Arrow, replacing Valtteri Bottas, who will join Alfa Romeo to replace the retired Kimi Raikkonen. The move was a long time coming and Bottas never looked like a solid title contender for Lewis in his five years at Mercedes. His consistency has given Merc dominance in the Constructors’ Championship, but in some ways it has also robbed F1 of a real title fight for many years.

Russell is no ordinary F1 driver. He has fought his way up the ranks and repeatedly surpassed his predecessor Williams. Mercedes’s next job will be to manage two talented and competitive drivers to avoid repeating the Hamilton-Rosberg days.
