The Williams driver has shown outstanding performance this season and has impressed everyone with his driving. He qualified in Q2 in all six races this season. The young Brit also impressed the 2-time world champion Fernando Alonso.

While talking about his future in Formula 1, Russell mentioned that he wants to start into his future as soon as possible. George is one of the main contenders for the Mercedes seat in 2022. Both places are open as Lewis and Valtteri have not yet signed for 2022.

“This season is intense, there is no messing around with contracts” – George Russell

According to Formula1.com, Russell wants to focus on this season and not think about 2022 and contract talks. Russell said, “I think we’d all have a nice summer break when the season is this intense without messing around with contracts!

“I haven’t really talked about it [with Toto], that was always just my way of thinking [to conclude the talks quickly], It’s in everyone’s best interests.

“I actually only concentrate on the here and now, but I’m sure that everything will really be sorted out by the end of the summer break at the latest,” said Russell.

Toto Wolff, Mercedes team boss, who is also close to Russell, wants to sort the contracts of their drivers earlier than last season.

Wolff said: “We don’t want to leave it until January to confirm the two drivers … also to give the driver security or to be able to concentrate on the work.

“Of course there are a lot of balls in the air for the next year and we will always try to do the best we can for the team in the long term and at the same time show full loyalty to our current driver line-up.

“We doubt neither Valtteri nor Lewis, but of course there will be discussions – but not in January next year,” said Wolff.
