Albon’s announcement was clearly well-humoured. Piastri liked the tweet within five minutes of it being published.

Albon said in a Williams statement: “It’s really exciting to be staying with Williams Racing for 2023. and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve as a team in the remainder of this season and next year.

“The team is pushing hard to progress, and I am really motivated to continue this journey and further develop our learnings together.”

Thai-British driver Albon has secured three points for Williams this season and sits 19th in the F1 world drivers’ championship leaderboard. It is unclear where Piastri’s future lies. He has been linked with a switch to McLaren ahead of the 2023 season as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo.
