As in Mexico, Gasly was the best of the others behind the two Mercedes and the Red Bulls.

The AlphaTauri driver was “extremely satisfied” with his qualifying performance after making many casual mistakes in practice in which he was fighting for a good vehicle balance.

“I have to say that I am extremely happy today because I had a difficult FP1,” said Gasly. “I didn’t feel comfortable in the car, I made a lot of mistakes and under these conditions I couldn’t make it work.

“It was a bit similar in qualifying at the start. I was just trying to focus on my driving and avoid the problems I was having.

After a difficult practice session, Gasly attributed his Formula 1 experience to his qualifying turnaround, admitting he couldn’t have done this if he had been in Formula 1 in his first year.

“I wasn’t really happy, but I think probably with the experience … I know I wouldn’t be able to write something like this in the first year, so I’m really happy.”

Looking ahead to the rest of the weekend, Gasly is confident that he will be under immense pressure from the two Ferraris and McLarens behind him on the grid.

“Of course we know that in the race the gaps with the cars in front will be even bigger, so we’ll still try to maximize everything on Turn 1 and on the first lap we know that tomorrow will be a short race, but we have to it “classifies us well,” he added.

“We know Lewis has a starting penalty of five places. So if we stay where we are, we could possibly start from P4.

“We obviously expect the Ferraris and McLaren to put a lot of pressure on the guys, but it’s not an easy track to overtake so we’ll do everything we can to hold them back.”
