Mick Schumacher had a difficult start to the season with Haas F1, as he entered his second year in Formula 1. But the German driver reveals that it has benefited him, as he has learned to cope with difficult times, and has was able to prove afterwards that he was on the level.
« I showed that I can get out of a difficult situation. It was clearly a period that made me a better driver and made me stronger » Schumacher said. « I embrace these moments because I am always aware that they will make me a better driver, a faster driver. »
« I wasn’t affected by that in any way, because I didn’t really let myself go. Of course what I was doing was trying to do my best. If the team says that I’m not doing my best, I have to accept that and try to do it. »
« I’ve had tough times in the past so I probably already knew how to handle part of the situation. But yeah, obviously it’s a bit different when you’re in F1. I know now I’m able to overcome these things. I hope that the day I fight for the title, it will benefit me. »
Driving for Ferrari is ‘the ultimate dream’
Schumacher spent his early years when his father was winning world titles, and he wants to continue racing in F1 in the future. He considers that he has done what is necessary to stay there, but also knows that the decision does not depend only on him.
« I feel like I’ve been in motor racing for as long as I can remember, before I can even think. I sat in a go-kart when I was two years old. I love the sport. »
« I think it’s interesting to see how quickly things change. I’ve proven myself in juniors and I feel like I’ve proven myself in F1 too. But no matter what, it will happen. »
The driver’s contractual situation with Ferrari is murky, but he does not deny that he would have liked to have outlets with the Scuderia as a starter, even if it is blocked for the moment by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
« I think the ultimate dream for everyone in F1 is to drive for such an iconic brand at some point. Again, I can’t go into more detail than that as it’s contractual, and we don’t we’re never allowed to talk about contract-related things to the media. »
A better understanding of the profession for its future
Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff spoke highly of him recently. Asked about the possibility of joining Mercedes, he does not rule it out: « If Mercedes is an option? I think right now everything is an option. »
Schumacher is famous for needing time to reach his best level, and he admits this himself, explaining that it is surely an advantage to validate his understanding: “I think there is nature and nurture, and I would rather fall into the category of nurture. »
« The good thing is that most people who are natural are probably going to start out and maybe they won’t really know why they got to that level or why they’re like that. Maybe they’ll reach 100% much sooner. »
« Maybe people who are nurtured will drive 70% and match them, but then they have a lot more possibilities. That’s where nurturing can, in a way, be better than natural. You don’t stop. We don’t stand still. »
