Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, has taunted Mercedes F1 after his son’s strategic victory at Zandvoort at the expense of the German team.
Lewis Hamilton’s situation late in the race, leading the Grand Prix on worn tires ahead of Max Verstappen on fresh tyres, was reminiscent of the highly controversial Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2021. Of course, the management of FIA race had nothing to do with it this time!
But, as at Yas Marina several months ago, Red Bull was doing better than Mercedes both on the track and on the pit wall. Jos Verstappen thus took a certain pleasure in teasing the German team.
“It was very tense but Red Bull was a new take on the best,” said the 50-year-old Dutchman.
« Max rode with each type of tire and thus showed his team which one worked best. Mercedes were good too, they had a chance to win. But luckily it worked well for us. And we could think Mercedes had learned from last year’s race in Abu Dhabi, but apparently that’s not the case. »
« Max has now won 10 out of 15 races. What he’s showing is amazing. He’s got the upper hand for sure. But you should never think of yourself as rich until you’re rich. »
At Zandvoort, Max Verstappen wore a helmet in a special livery in homage to the one his father used during his career. And after taking pole position, he waved it in front of the cameras, which unfortunately Jos didn’t see!
« I couldn’t see the footage but I was sent pictures afterwards. I know Max is grateful for everything that has happened in the past and we fought for it. »
