"Formula 1 is the Champions League"– Toto Wolff warns potential newcomers to not expect immediate success

Toto Wolff warns the newcomers of tough competition as the stakeholders are about to complete the new units.

F1 stakeholders have yet to finalize the introduction of a new generation of engines into the sport. However, it is known that the new unit leaves out the MGU-H element, the most complicated component.

This is to encourage VW to get into the sport. Because VW was keen to eliminate this component in order to have more road-relevant engines while reducing production and design costs.

Mercedes did not advocate removing the MGU-H as they have invested heavily in it over the years. Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff said: “It’s great that we have strong OEMs who are interested in getting into our sport.”

“Of course, none of these large automobile manufacturers want to get into a situation in which they are very uncompetitive.”

In addition, Wolff warned potential newbies not to expect immediate success in sport. Apart from Mercedes, all other automakers initially struggled with the new turbo hybrid technology.

Wolff said: “Formula 1 is the Champions League and nobody can expect that he will enter the Champions League for the first time and go straight to the final and go home with the biggest trophy.”

Toto Wolff claims newbies misunderstand the sport

Mercedes has been in the sport for a long time. You have a lot of money, sweat, and blood. invested [suffered] getting terrible results where they are.

However, Wolff believes that the new manufacturers are doing the sport. He explained that everything takes time and balance. “Everyone has to realize that you can’t just come and win, you have to give them time.”

“Look at the history of Mercedes in the first five years as a works team, the terrible Honda days, the Renault days,” remembers Wolff. “Everyone had to fight their way up to win races and championships in the end.”

He also stated that throwing money on problems is not the right approach. Time and patience are the two most important ingredients for success.

He claims this has been misunderstood by many OEMs in the past. “If you look at Toyota, BMW and Honda, all that money, all of the resources, are irrelevant if you don’t give the project enough time.”

“Anyone who enters Formula 1 as a team or as a manufacturer of components misunderstands that this takes time. The fact that it is not easy to win is what makes the sport so attractive, ”he added.

Newcomers vs. Incumbents

The 49-year-old Austrian has been with Mercedes since 2013 and has enjoyed fame since 2014 during her absolute streak of dominance.

He said so many details have not yet been finalized for the 2025 engines. Wolff emphasized: “We all agree on the future sustainability concept, but what needs to be defined are the details – newcomers versus established companies and various other parameters.”

And then concluded: “But the global concept is clear and we are well advanced in the discussion of the regulations, but we are not there.”

Even if Mercedes has set standards in the turbo-hybrid era from day one, it will be difficult for them in the 2021 World Championship. The market-leading Mercedes power plants are proving to be fragile, with Valtteri Bottas using six internal combustion engines.

That caused problems for seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, as Red Bulls Max Verstappen is twelve behind him in the drivers’ standings.
