Formula 1 – Hamilton: The 2021 season will be “the toughest in a long time”.

Frank Parker

Reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton believes the 2021 season will not be easy as he expects the battle against Red Bull to continue all season.

The Mercedes driver is aiming for a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 driver’s title and is currently leading the overall standings after a sensational victory in Bahrain last time. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, however, was significantly faster and led all the sessions before the race.

Red Bull appears to have the quicker package as Hamilton didn’t win until after a battle with Verstappen at the end of the race – the Dutchman had to vacate a position due to an overtaking off the track. However, Hamilton is wary of the challenge that Verstappen and Red Bull present.

“I’ve been doing this all my life since I was a kid and went karting,” Hamilton told La Gazzetta dello Sport, as quoted by RacingNews365.com. “It’s still fantastic, it’s great to drive a car built by geniuses and compete against talent.

“It still remains a great fight to be on the track and try everything. It’s always an uphill battle. Even though you win so many titles, it doesn’t mean that you are in control or that every year is the same because you need to keep improving and communicating well.

“At the beginning of a season you never know where it’s going to end, and I like that. The 2021 season will be the toughest in a long time, but that motivates me and my team even more. “

The 36-year-old commented on many positive changes in Formula 1 and was a leading voice for more inclusivity in sport – the Briton is determined to continue to focus on these issues.

“I started to look inside myself and wonder why this sport is facing this problem,” added Hamilton. “I wasn’t happy with the answer to this question, apparently nobody knows the answer.

“You have to start with the statistics to discover this barrier, as dark-skinned children, for example, do not select certain studies to get into Formula One. So I set up a committee and we worked with several people for nine months to come up with ideas. In July we should be ready to show some results and provide concrete information. F1 is the tip of the iceberg, but it’s the example of the series that falls below F1 until karting.

“It’s a long process that takes a lot of time, but people realize that change is necessary. ”
