Romain Grosjean has had to do a test with Mercedes F1 since last year. Toto Wolff, the team principal, had promised him one last run in Formula 1 after his premature end to his career, following his accident in Bahrain.
Initially, the author of ten podiums was to ride at the French Grand Prix in 2021, but the test could not be done at that time. Nonetheless, the IndyCar driver doesn’t blame Mercedes and admits he’s the one who hasn’t followed through to find a date yet.
“Not yet and it’s 100% my fault” assures Grosjean. « I have not been able to give Mercedes the dates of my return to Europe. If you have followed me on social media, you know that I have moved to the United States, to Miami.
« I moved in December 2021, I have been very busy. I had to drive the Mercedes at the French Grand Prix and after that, do a test day at Le Castellet, on the Paul Ricard.
« Because of the Covid, the date of the French Grand Prix was moved and I had a race the same weekend. We wanted to do the test day but there was a quarantine between France and the United Kingdom, so for Mercedes it was getting very complicated. »
But the French driver wants to be reassuring that the test will take place: « We had a date for September at Silverstone but the circuit could not be booked. I was in contact with Mercedes, saw Toto in Miami for F1 and he said yes, the test will take place and I have no doubt of it. »
« Mercedes followed perfectly to contact me all the time, but it’s my fault, I couldn’t find the time to come back to Europe and do this test. It should be the Mercedes car of 2019 or 2020, which are the two fastest they’ve ever built, so I’m excited. »
