Porsche has no further plans in F1 at the moment, after negotiations with Red Bull Racing failed. Engine manufacturers wishing to come in 2026 must register before October 15, but Toto Wolff believes that Porsche will have more time.
The Mercedes F1 director believes that the Stuttgart manufacturer could take the time to think about its project and choose to enter the premier category one or two years after the arrival of the new hybrid era.
“I don’t think you have to register before October 15, if you want to join the championship a year later,” Wolff said. « Definitely it would be a great thing for Formula 1, if Porsche were to join the championship. »
« They just need to figure out if there is another interesting project or if they can buy a team. Maybe it won’t be in 2026, maybe it will be in 2027 or 2028, but it would be a great addition to the grid. »
A great marketing benefit for all of F1
In any case, Wolff hopes that Porsche will manage to join Formula 1, judging that the arrival of such a prestigious brand could bring the discipline even more to the fore, and thus benefit all the teams involved.
« All the big companies, especially the car manufacturers, including Red Bull who are pretty good at it, buy a racing team and invest a lot of money to run it. »
« But investing even more in activation is good for Formula 1. If a brand like Porsche, known around the world, invests its marketing funds in activation in Formula 1, we will all benefit. I think that’s the most important part. »
« It’s not just about having the team and making it work, it’s also about running big advertising campaigns and building awareness of the brand in all the markets we race in. That’s why having these big brands in Formula 1 is important. »
