Former Mercedes CEO Nick Fry returns to motorsport with McLaren Applied

Nick Fry, the former CEO of the Mercedes F1 team, has been named non-executive chairman of McLaren Applied.

Fry was a prominent figure in the world of Formula 1, as managing director of BAR from 2002 before later becoming CEO of Brawn GP.

He stayed in that position when the team became Mercedes until the beginning of the 2013 season when he was replaced by Toto Wolff.

He has not worked in motorsport since, but is now returning with McLaren Applied.

“I am very excited to be joining McLaren Applied,” he said.

“The company has a clear vision to create a better future in its key markets of motorsport, automotive and transportation.

“I look forward to working with this talented team to introduce innovative new technologies, including high-performance electric drive components, connectivity solutions for public transport and new additions to our market-leading motorsport product range.

“This will be a wonderful adventure that will give the company the success it deserves.”

Last week, McLaren Applied became an independent company. A significant new investment underpins the future of our company and our groundbreaking innovations in electrification, telemetry, control and analytics. Read the full story here: https://t.co/lyGaf7m647 pic.twitter.com/Tdo9NKVhYA

McLaren sold its Applied division to the Greybull investment group back in August as part of its strategy of focusing exclusively on the manufacture of supercars and elite motorsport.

However, it remains at home in the UK team’s technology center and plays a huge role in the Formula 1 field as it provides the ECU that is used in all of the power units.

Marc Meyohas, managing partner at Greybull, says that Fry’s joining them is a “validation” of the group and the work they are doing.

“Nick is a recognized leader in both motorsport and the automotive industry, having been deeply involved in both growth companies and large, complex organizations,” he said.

“It is a clear endorsement of McLaren Applied’s strategy and roadmap that we can attract a person of his caliber and expertise.

“This will be an exciting and rewarding phase in our development and Nick will be a valuable addition to all of us.”
