“FIA needs to be on top of these things”

"FIA needs to be on top of these things"

In the week following the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, there was some controversy surrounding the Ferrari team, which went into action with two different floors in the tire test. Afterwards it turned out that there was no violation of the rules, but several team bosses agree that the FIA should have been more transparent about it.

Photos showed that Carlos Sainz was driving with a different floor than teammate Charles Leclerc. As it is against the rules to drive with new parts in such a test, the action raised questions among rival teams, especially as Ferrari is still struggling with porpoising. However, Ferrari is said to have shown that it had already driven with the floor in question in the winter test in Bahrain.

F1 team bosses want transparency from FIA

At the press conference several team bosses are calling for more transparency from the FIA, as they believe the fuss would not have been necessary if clarity had been provided on the issue. “Just needs to be on top of these things,” believes Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff. “It can’t be that any team runs a component in an environment it shouldn’t be doing.”

McLaren would have been one of the teams asking questions about Ferrari’s action, but CEO Zak Brown says he himself had little to do with the issue. However, he too is calling for more transparency. “It’s been suggested – or so I’ve heard – that maybe it was on an older floor. Maybe that was the case,” he begins his story.

Example of Ferrari in 2019

He adds that if that is indeed the case, it is important to show that to the other teams. As an example, he cites the uproar surrounding Ferrari’s power unit in 2019. “We’ve had in the past, not long ago, an engine violation a few years back, and then there was a significant fine. We don’t know how much and we also don’t know exactly what was done,” Brown continued.

Partly because of that issue, total transparency is now critical, even Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi believes. “All we need is transparency. We need to know if there was something wrong or not. And if there is, what’s the outcome? That’s it,” the Frenchman concludes.
