Scuderia Ferrari’s fuel partner Shell is reportedly developing a fuel that will make up for Ferrari’s 20 horsepower deficit compared to Mercedes engines in 2021. The new fuel could give the Italian designer an edge over the competition in the new season.
The FIA has mandated that by 2022 cars run on E10 fuel, which is a blend of 90% fossil fuel and 10% ethanol, to make F1 more sustainable. However, as a by-product of this change, the teams had to redesign their engine chambers.
[RUMOR] Motorsport Italy reports that Shell’s E10 research center has developed a fuel for Ferrari that appears to make up for the estimated 20 horsepower loss due to the introduction of the E10 fuel (+ redesign of the ICE). The Ferrari engine from 2022 also delivers positive results. twitter.com/motorsport_it/…#F1 | Sorpresa #Ferrari: la benzina E10 ha già recuperato i 20 cv persi # Formula1it.motorsport.com / f1 / news / f1-fer…[RUMOR] Motorsport Italy reports that Shell’s E10 research center has developed a fuel for Ferrari that appears to make up for the estimated 20 horsepower loss due to the introduction of the E10 fuel (+ redesign of the ICE). The introduction of ethanol forced engineers to redesign their engines’ combustion chambers, with all teams facing similar challenges. However, according to reports from Motorsport.com Italia, Ferrari could benefit massively from Shell’s new fuel technology and remove the 20 horsepower disadvantage they have compared to Mercedes. Team boss Mattia Binotto said about the loss of performance:
“We confirmed in Monza that Ferrari is missing 20 hp from McLaren’s Mercedes engine. We lost most of the time on the last section before Parabolica, similar to the home stretch. The poor performance is also noticeable when starting up again and overtaking. It was nothing new for us, but we are working flat out on a further development of the engine, which we want to get on the track as soon as possible this year. “
Charles Leclerc lost to Lando Norris in the Italian Grand Prix after the McLaren drove past the Ferrari on Curva Grande. The loss of performance was the biggest factor why Leclerc couldn’t defend against Norris, Perez and Bottas.
Ferrari outperformed McLaren despite lower performance
Despite the defeat at Monza, Ferrari defeated McLaren and finished third in the constructors’ championship at the end of the year. The Maranello team beat the Woking team by 48.5 points due to the consistent performances of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc. The icing on the cake for Scuderia’s performance was Sainz’s fifth place in the drivers’ championship.
While Lando Norris took responsibility for leading his team into the battle with the Italian constructor, Daniel Ricciardo was found too weak. The Australian had a tough debut season with McLaren, with nine places outside of the points despite having the same engine that powers Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.

The two teams will return for the 2022 season, with both teams hoping the new regulations and car changes will suit their respective drivers.
