Ferrari’s SF21 is excellent on slow corners and this engine update will do better on fast tracks
Ferrari has already announced that a major engine upgrade is imminent as it has not updated all of the engine parts it had homologated for the 2021 season. Now the Italian publication La Gazzetta Dello Sport has revealed that Ferrari will find an additional 10 hp in the update. Ferrari’s engine had been hampered by technical regulations at the end of the 2019 season when it had the most powerful engine of any team. At the beginning of the 2020 season, he was faced with double technical regulations that hindered his engine by a whopping 65 hp compared to Mercedes and, thanks to COVID19, was development-free. Its chassis was also hobbled because it was designed with a more powerful engine in mind, so it had massive drag problems.

By the start of the 2021 season, Ferrari had recovered much of the horsepower deficit as its engine lagged about 20 horsepower below the pace that Mercedes and Honda were on par with the Renault engine. Now, this additional 10 horsepower, coupled with some aerodynamic improvements, should make Ferrari faster on the straights in time for its home race, which at Monza is the fastest F1 track of all. Monza is known as the temple of speed and cars are driven at full throttle.

Ferrari is also working on a big new engine for 2022
The Prancing Horse would have fought McLaren, who is battling it out for P3 in the Constructors’ Championship. McLaren uses the Mercedes engine and its aerodynamic concept makes it fast on the straights and in fast corners. Ferrari has also made some improvements to the ERS system that will allow Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. to use more energy each lap and therefore go faster.

Ferrari expects to struggle in Belgium, the next race this weekend, as its engine deficit will catch up as even Spa is a performance sensitive circuit. Ferrari believes it is on average 0.7 seconds per lap slower than the Mercedes and Red Bull, 0.4 seconds of which comes from the engine. Ferrari could potentially make up almost half of that deficit with this last major update. This will keep it well for the remainder of the season as there are plenty of force sensitive stretches to come. His car is already leading in slowly rolling corners where mechanical grip is paramount.
